Course Description:

The Health Science Course is designed to provide for the development of advanced knowledge and skills related to a wide variety of health careers.  Students will have hands-on experiences for continued knowledge and skill development.  The course may be taught by different methodologies such as clinical rotation and career preparation learning.  To pursue a career in the health science industry, students should recognize, learn to reason, think critically, make decisions, solve problems and communicate effectively.  Students should recognize that quality health care depends on the ability to work well with others.  The health science industry is comprised of diagnostics, therapeutics, health informatics, supports services and biotechnology research and development systems that function individually and collaboratively to provide comprehensive health care.  Students should identify the employment opportunities, technology and safety requirements of each system.  Students are expected to apply the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue a health science career through further education and employment.  Professional integrity in the health science industry is dependent on acceptance of ethical and legal responsibilities.  Students are expected to employ their ethical and legal responsibilities, recognize limitations and understand the implications of their actions.  


Prerequisites:

Principles of Health Science and Biology.  Recommended for students grades 10-12


Instructional Philosophy:

Health Science is an opportunity to encourage students to make a difference in their lives and those around them.  Students are expected to maintain a professional appearance and characteristics, be self motivated in acquiring skills and completing projects that meets standards.  Teamwork is MANDATORY.  Students will utilize lectures, textbooks, research, online resources, health science learning lab and community resources to acquire skills and knowledge.  There will be frequent opportunities for students to use technology for research as wells as presentations.  Types of technology that will be used are Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and spreadsheets (EXCEL) to accommodate all types of learners.  Assessment methods will include written exams, test and quizzes, oral and written research reports or speeches, skill proficiency and projects.    


Course Goals:

Students are expected to understand and master use of advanced medical terminology, medical equipment and skills.  Students will analyze, evaluate and demonstrate effective communication skills, identify problems and participate in decision making process while recognizing the impact of decisions.  They will recognize professional integrity, ethical and legal responsibilities and implications of their actions along with the ability to work well with others.  Students will identify employment opportunities, technology and safety requirements.

Major Projects:

Project 1:  Create a mobile about Communicable Diseases.  Rubric Provided

Project 2:  Research a career in the Healthcare Industry.  Prepare a poster and 2 minute oral Presentation.  Rubric to be provided.

Project 3: Create a poster over assigned body system.  Rubric provided.

Project 4: Create a poster illustrating an assigned body System and it’s functions.

Assessment:

Will include interactive role play, daily assignments, journal entries, written exams, skills evaluation test, projects, and oral presentations. Teacher feedback will encourage correction and re-do of assignments until standards are mastered. All assessments are to demonstrate mastery of course standards. The grading policy is accordance with the DISD Handbook.


Major Grades 67% (4 Tests Per Nine Weeks)

Daily Grades 33% (10 Daily Assignments Per Nine Weeks)


FNL (Friday Night Live):  Friday evenings: 3:45 - 7:00 pm To be assigned on an as needed basis for any student with multiple missing assignments.


Tutoring is available Monday-Thursday before or after school.  You must make arrangement with me and get a pass in order to come in for tutoring.

Classroom Rules:

  1. First 20 minutes of class is Axe time- no one is permitted to leave during instruction
  2. Cell phone must be turned in before leaving classroom to go to bathroom, library,nurse,counselor, etc. (you need to leave it in your backpack or leave on the teacher’s desk) if you are caught in the hallway during class time with your cell phone, it will be taken up
  3. Students are to remain seated during instruction
  4. Students will use proper protocol when addressing the teacher or visitors.  Yes mam/no mam, yes sir/no sir
  5. Failure to complete assignments may result in FNL
  6. DO NOT touch anything without asking Mrs. Richard
  7. Be Mature or you will be asked to leave!
  8. No cell phones are allowed in the classroom! (NO EXCEPTIONS)
  9. Show respect to everyone in the room at all times (you don’t have to like everyone but you will respect each other while in my classroom)
  10. When the tardy bell rings you should be starting your warm up
  11. No grooming in class
  12. Do not draw on my tables- if I catch you there will be a discipline referral
  13. No eating in class- Clear water is allowed
  14. Do not write on dry erase boards!
  15. Clean up your area before leaving.
  16. NO CHEATING! If you are caught you will get a discipline referral
  17. If you borrow a writing utensil from me, please put it back when you leave
  18. When I am talking you are quiet!
  19. Failure to complete assignments may result in Friday Night Live
  20. If for some reason I get called away for a medical emergency, or am not in the room when the bell rings- start your warm up and read or remain quiet until I return. A neighboring teaching will be checking on you in the event of an emergency.

Class work policy:

Any work that you don’t turn in will become a ZERO in the gradebook (whether you are absent or not).  If you

have 3 or more zeros in the gradebook, you will be assigned FNL.  I will accept missing/late work up until the end

of the current grading period.  I will not accept late work once we have submitted grades for that grading period.  

I will post on the board what we are doing each week, even if you are absent during the week you will still be

responsible for the information and will still test on the same day as everyone else.  

IF YOU ARE ABSENT: YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR FINDING OUT WHAT YOU MISSED!



TEST: You will have at least 4 test per nine weeks.  You will have a semester exam for each nine weeks.  If you miss a test or semester exam, YOU are responsible for setting up a time with the teacher to make up the test within 3 days.  If the test is not made up within 3 days- you will be assigned detention or FNL to complete the test.  Retest will be offered at the teacher's discretion and not offered for every test.
